Film Review: The Hunger Games

The shaky camera REALLY bothered me. While I understand why they shot the film like that, it made it really difficult to follow, visually, at times. It very much reminded me of like a Nazi-Germany Holocaust film. If you’re prone to motion sickness, I strongly suggest you take something before you go to the film.
I thought some parts of the film were too slow, and others too fast. I felt like it took a really long time to get to the Games, but then it felt like the Games just breezed by. That, I think, just just my own anticipation of SEEING the games. I also kept confusing The Hunger Games with Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Overall, I think they did a great job.

I almost started to cry when Katniss stood up for Prim. I know there was some disagreement about Prim giving Katniss the pin in the film, but there are certain things like that, that need to be compromised in a book-to-film adaptation. They cut Madge(?)’s character out completely, so they had to do something about the pin. It’s not a big deal, in my opinion.

I was, however, incredibly disappointed that they fudged the part where District 11 sends Katniss bread. I thought this would appear, particularly because Gale gave her fresh bread in the beginning of the film, and then they showed the scene where Peeta gave Katniss bread. The thread of Katniss receiving bread would have been complete with that scene, and it seemed odd that they cut it. However, I cried so hard when Rue died and they showed District 11 flipping their shit, particularly Rue’s father. That part, with the switch of the salute from District 11 to 12, I think worked.

I think Jennifer Lawrence was absolutely brilliant as Katniss. She’s a very curvy woman, and I was SO pleased to see that they DID NOT sexualize Katniss. (Anyone can feel free to disagree, but a girl can’t help it when she’s got huge breasts.) Katniss’s skirts were always knee-length and even where there might have been an opportunity to give her a low-cut top, they didn’t. I think this stays true to both Katniss’s character and Cinna’s, as her designer.

Josh Hutcherson was great as Peeta–he damn near exceeded my expectations. However, my absolute FAVOURITE was Woody Harrelson as Haymitch. (I’m also convinced he’s boning everyone! :D) He absolutely EXCEEDED my expectations. His chemistry with Peeta and Katniss was amazing. I seriously think I need to go seek out some Haymitch fic and/or write some.

Lenny Kravitz was great as Cinna. Cinna is one of my favourite characters in the whole series and I love that they gave him gold eyeliner. 😀 Perfection!

Overall, I laughed, I cried. (Okay, maybe I didn’t laugh, but I certainly cried.)
